The Writer
"I offer words of longing and hope to provide companionship for the journey home."
~ Catherine Coates

Meet Catherine:
The Writer
I Am a Writer.
Paradox.
I write because the impulse is strong.
I write even when the block is implacable.
I write to express who I am.
I write to hide.
I write from inspiration’s wellspring.
I write when the well is dry.
I write with longing for clarity.
I write with obscurity.
I write to draw a conclusion.
I write with no end in sight.
I write to explore.
I write with blinders on.
I write with expansiveness.
I write shut down.
I write out of despair.
And my writing speaks of hope.
Hope is one of the themes of my writing. Other themes include my longing for Holy Mystery, (how I speak of God); my struggle with depression; how community has been a healing presence in my life. I also wrestle with theological issues such as the meaning of life and how then shall we live in the face of daily conundrums.
I’ve journaled most of my life. My first book of poems and prayers, Longing for Intimacy: Glimmers of Hope, was culled from my journals. Now I write a poem a day, and keep a gratitude journal. I find my inspiration from other writers, sacred services I attend, and whatever comes my way. Today I wrote this. It was Dictionary.com’s word of the day.
Breviloquent.
An oxymoron for sure.
It means speaking succinctly.
But it is so beautiful and meaningful.
I like those kinds of words.
I think I’ll let this poem be breviloquent
It’s surprising for me to remember I also wrote some stories when I was a teen. Today they might be called fan fiction. The shows involved were “A Man from U.N.C.L.E.” and “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.” I still remember the expansion of the acronym UNCLE, as well as that of their nemesis, THRUSH. I was quite taken with Illya Kuryakin known as Ducky on “NCIS.”I wrote myself into the stories. Quite a lot of fun.
